Guatavita significa dentro de la lengua chibcha fin de la labranza. En su época fue el centro de culto a la diosa del agua Chie, y los aldeanos fueron expertos orfebres, sin embargo en el año de 1593, el oidor Miguel Ibarra, fundador del pueblo, le adjudicó las tierras a los indígenas de la región. El pueblo de Guatavita perduró hasta la fecha del 15 de septiembre de 1967. La construcción de la nueva cabecera municipal se inició el 14 de noviembre de 1964, y en el mes de Agosto de 1967 se comenzó el traslado de la población aunque el traslado oficial se da el 15 de septiembre de 1967. Actualmente el pueblo consta de plazas, almacenes, edificio de gobernación, entre otras construcciones de tipo cívico.

La Laguna de Guatavita se encuentra en el municipio de Sesquilé, al norte de la cabecera municipal de Guatavita, descubierta en 1537 por Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada, se cree que celebraba una ceremonia que consistía en que el Zipa (Cacique) se bañaba en las aguas cubierto de oro. Este es uno de los orígenes de la leyenda de El Dorado. Se intentó drenar varias veces la laguna para hallar sus tesoros ocultos, uno de los intentos más importantes fue el del cápitan Lázaro Fonte quien pudo extraer varias piezas de oro fino, y el de Antonio de Sepúlveda en el siglo XVI, quien también logró sacar esmeraldas y piezas de cerámica. Realmente el baño en oro era únicamente cuando se proclamaba como cacique la persona elegida, la cual debía llegar totalmente pura de pensamiento a la laguna, colocarse ungüentos y ponerse oro en polvo sobre la piel, para luego sumergirse a la laguna, y al salir era sabio. Después de este acto, se ofrecían oro, esmeraldas y otras piedras preciosas.
