El Castillo San Antonio de Salgar uno de los pocos monumentos históricos que conserva una arquitectura colonial, genuina, abrió sus puertas  como un centro de recreación, cultura y entretenimiento para el caribe colombiano. El conocido fuerte de San Antonio de Salgar, localizado en lo que hoy se denomina Puerto Colombia y anteriormente Puerto de Sabanilla viene a ser el único testimonio arquitectónico que aún conserva rasgos de la arquitectura colonial, cerca de la desembocadura del Río Magdalena, se encontraba la ensenada del pequeño caserío de sabanilla que en ocasiones servía de fondeadero a las naves y embarcaciones que se acercaban a su playas. Su estratégica ubicación fue un lugar ideal para la introducción de contrabando, utilizando el Río Magdalena como vía de acceso al interior del país. Es por eso que con el paso de los años llegó a convertirse en un prospero puerto. Conocedores de la situación, las autoridades españolas con asiento en Cartagena, ordenaron la construcción de un fuerte sobre la loma llamada de san Antonio cerca del caserío de sabanilla, desde el cual se pudiera divisar las embarcaciones que pretendían atracar en esa zona o remontar el Río Magdalena. Ese fuerte del que aún existen vestigios en el corregimiento de Salgar, en su época se conoció con el nombre de Santa Bárbara o San Antonio.

The famous Fort San Antonio de Salgar, located in what is now called Puerto Colombia and former Port of Sabanilla becomes the only evidence that still retains the architectural features of the colonial architecture, near the mouth of the Magdalena River, was the small hamlet of Cove sabanilla which sometimes served as anchorage for ships and boats that approached its shores. Its strategic location was ideal for the introduction of contraband, using the Magdalena River as a gateway into the country. That's why over the years grew into a thriving port.Knowing the situation, the Spanish authorities based in Cartagena, ordered the construction of a fort on the hill called San Antonio near the town of sabanilla, from which you can actually see the boats that dock in the area sought or trace the Magdalena River. That strong vestiges of which still exist in the village of Salgar, at the time were known by the name of Santa bárbara or San Antonio.

In the late eighteenth century, the fort of Santa Barbara was relatively deserted but once the struggle for independence broke out again become important because of its valuable strategic location. Thus, in August 1810, after the reconquest of Cartagena Morillo troops, the Governor of that place, Gabriel de torres y Velasco gave precise orders to maintain strong service constantly. The expedition was entrusted to José Catalán.  Later, in the Republican period due to increased smuggling entering the country, bypassing the ports of Cartagena and Santa Marta, in 1850 ordered the construction of an office on this site, which later served as an intermediate station Bolivar Railway in 1897 investigated by: Roberto Angulo G, Ignacio Consuegra B, Alberto Samudio T.
